Poetry Spa Day - celebrating wellness through poetry and reading June 2019

  • Birmingham Midland Institute 9 Margaret Street Birmingham, England, B3 United Kingdom (map)

Welcome to the Poetry Spa - enjoy a wonderfully inspiring day devoted to poetry with the 'Emergency Poet' Deborah Alma and former Poet Laureate of Birmingham Roz Goddard in these historic surroundings.

Back by popular demand - please note that this is a repeat of our March event

Receive a free copy of 'Dirty Laundry', the much-celebrated daring and honest poetry book by Deborah Alma, and a Reading Spa gift pack as part of your ticket price and prepare for friendly discussions, absorption in poetry, a writing workshop and glorious afternoon tea.

Start the day gently with a spell of silent reading. Join a small group of other bookish people to experience the benefits of concentrated reading in quiet, conducive surroundings. We’ll be withdrawing to contemplate and read in a specially set up room. Bring your own text or borrow one on the day.

'Writing can be good for you' - this workshop is a gentle introduction into writing the self through poetry. Through a series of enjoyable exercises, sharing poetic texts and conversation, you will be helped to transform some of the material of the self into imaginative writing; focusing on the positive, to help achieve self-acceptance, calm and to be properly in the moment. There will be no pressure to share your writing. Just bring yourself.

Also on offer are a limited number of 15 minute poetry consultations from the Emergency Poet, a poetic first-aid service prescribing poems as cures, plus a free anthology to take away. (You can choose to book one of these when you buy your ticket - you will also be able to attend the rest of the first session as described below).

The day at a glance:
10.00 - 12.00 Roz Goddard hosts a silent reading spa session with poetry aplenty, mindful reading and meditation and a discussion in the cafe to follow (while Deborah Alma also offers the pre-booked poetry on prescription consultations)
